Sardar Udham (2021) is a biographical history drama in Indian Hindi based on the life of Udham Singh, a Marxist revolutionary and freedom fighter best known for killing Michael Odwyer in London to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919.
Considering the life of the revolutionary figure Udham Singh who committed a 1919 massacre of Indians in the Indian city of Amritssar (Jallian wala bagh), in Shoojit Sircar’s UDham, the parallels between the late twentieth century India which was on the verge of independence and today’s BJP-ruled India are hard to ignore.
A film about an Indian revolutionary who shot Michael ODwyer from London in the 1940s to “avenge” the 1919 massacre by his governor in Punjabs, who felt at the time that sitting was a substitute for teaching.
The film concludes firmly when the filmmakers say that more than 100 years have passed since the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy and that the Indians have yet not received an official apology from the British government.
With an exhausting running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes, Shoojit Udham lets us meet a stoic man on a mission. He moves in the shadows, relentlessly in his quest for Dwyer’s freedom from oppressive British rule.
The film jumps back to Punjab in 1931, when Sher Singh (Vicky Kaushal) is released from prison after serving his sentence. He is being shot in London as the lead actor of his brother Sunny, who has the same nonsensical reasons as Shiddat.

Udham hangs up and shows a photo of Bhagat Singh taken during his last days in prison and shows how revolutionary the world was.
Vicky Kaushal tackles a few hard things and you can feel his fear when Udham recounts the 1919 massacre with pictures showing him as a young boy. A revolutionary named Udham Singh is involved in revolutionary activities, but in a way that does not make him an exploitative or illustrious figure.
Although he makes impassioned speeches against British atrocities against India, even though they are traders, he hates neither the British figurehead nor British rule or atrocities in India.
If you are curious about the silent existence of freedom fighters, this film is just the thing for you. Flashbacks show Odwyer’s time in London, where he met other Indian expats and helped them in their efforts to send weapons and ammunition to revolutionaries in India.
They also show his time in India with the HSRA and his time with Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries.
In March 2020, Vicky Kaushals announced one of his most heroic projects of his career, Sardar Udham Singh, a biographical film in Indian Hindi in which he plays the role of revolutionary freedom fighter Udham Singh, known for the murder of Michael Odwyer in London and for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar.
Director Shoojit Sircar’s previous film Gulabo (Sitabo), one of India’s early biggies, opted for Ott release.
The story of Sardar Udham Singh represents strength, pain, passion, extraordinary courage and sacrifice of many of the values Vicky tries to live up to in the film.
We see Udham Singh coming to England under a false identity, persecuting his loot all over the country and carrying out assassinations. Small rebellions in the face of larger ones bounce and sparkle in Sircar’s film.
